The 3Rs in Business

When I first attended our seminars as a student, and even when I began training as a personal mastery facilitator, I felt that the 3Rs (Resentment, Resistance, and Revenge) were more of a problem in relationships than in business. I mean after all, business isn’t personal – it’s just business. And so even though there were losses, deceptions, and disappointments in business, the 3Rs’ true impact was on marriages, families, and communities.

I didn’t have to hear or see very many custody battles to come face to face with the phenomenal prices the 3Rs have on families. But business is a different story, right?

Personal Mastery - Overcome the 3R's

Wrong. I have realized over time that the 3Rs are one of the most destructive forces working against entrepreneurs, particularly in network marketing. And a ton of people’s resentments are not towards other people, but towards themselves.

Let me give you a scenario. A rookie direct sales professional leaves a company meeting or convention and they are fired up about their business. They get home and begin contacting their warm market. Five of the first six calls are NOs, two of those five were rude, and the one remaining is interested in getting some more information about the product.

The average person is going to feel resentment, and a majority of it will be towards themselves. “I’m terrible at this.” “I shouldn’t have joined this company.” “I’m never going to make this work…what was I thinking?” And the internal beating begins.

Now some people don’t experience this at first, but once they’ve enrolled some people, and some of those people don’t make it, the resentments will often show up. The bottom line is that dealing with disappointments is a key piece of business, and just knowing that isn’t enough. If we don’t deal with them, they will corrode our motivation and undermine our commitments. We must use solutions to free ourselves of resentment.

One solution is to talk openly, honestly, and responsibly with someone about your resentments. When I feel resentment towards myself, I tell my wife. “Honey, I’m really upset with myself right now. I feel I should be better than this.” And just speaking about it alleviates the heaviness.

After a while I can feel it leaving, and I’m ready to get back to work. Another solution is to do something kind for yourself – something you normally don’t do. It can be an afternoon of golf, a massage, or anything.

In our personal mastery and leadership seminars we do extensive work with the 3Rs and resentment because it is such a major obstacle. When disappointments arise in your business, I challenge you to notice them and then take action to free yourself so you can be more successful over time!
